Imagine watching the electrical pulses travelling in your muscles, or hooking up an earthworm to a rig and recording action potentials in its nerves. You can blow little wisps of air at a cockroach and learn why they are so hard to catch by monitoring their nervous system, do micro dissections of snail brains to look at the orange neurons inside and see them work as the snails learn.
Bright Lights in the Lab enables high school students to experience the full research cycle: conduct literature searches; organize & execute research plans; deliver a report on their findings; meet, collaborate and work with current researchers and academics from the University.

firefly foundation presents: the video project

In 2011 the Firefly Foundation was proud to sponsor the Toronto Brain Bee. We asked the top three competitors to talk to us about what inspires them about the brain. We followed Jessica as she accompanied Sakina Rizvi (PhD Candidate in the Kennedy Lab, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Neuroscience at the University of Toronto) throughout an exploration on how depression affects our brain.
